BIO

Jodie Nunn - Headshot_edited.jpg

Jodie Nunn (she/her) is a freelance dance artist, writer, and educator, existing thoughtfully at intersection at which dance meets the socio-political. Jodie is driven in her pursuit of knowledge and the possibility of using dance as a vehicle for invoking meaningful change both within and beyond the dance spheres she occupies.

Jodie trained at the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), Battersea, London from 2016-2019, obtaining a BA (Hons) Ballet Education with First class honours and Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Dance with Distinction. Continuing with her academic endeavours, Jodie enrolled in a Master's with the University of Roehampton (London), studying Dance Politics and Sociology (2019). Jodie graduated from the programme in January 2022 with Master of Arts in Dance Politics and Sociology with Distinction, and was awarded the Dissertation Prize for her thesis entitled 'Breaking Pointe? 2020 Cultural Disorientation and the Relevé of the Ballet-Activist'.

As a dance educator, Jodie has led sessions in community, private sector, and education settings. At present, Jodie is a teacher of ballet, contemporary and musical theatre at a dance school based in Suffolk/Cambridgeshire. Jodie works as a specialist freelance dance teacher, teaching dance in primary and secondary schools in Cambridge. Jodie values her role in providing the tools of artistry, musicality, and creativity, and endeavours to curate an open and collaborative studio environment. Jodie is currently offering dance workshop opportunities, dance in schools programmes, and beginners ballet and barre fitness classes. Click to connect for future collaboration.

Informed by her studies throughout her Master's, Jodie currently works as a freelance dance writer and is always searching for new and innovative ways to infuse her work with calls to social action and continues to weaponise both movement and written word as a means for illuminating social injustices prevalent in dance and wider society. In May 2022, Jodie took part in Resolution Review 2022, where she was mentored by some of the industry's most renowned dance writers (including Sara Veale, Josephine Leask and Isaac Ouro-Gnao).

Whilst studying for her Master's, Jodie was selected to act as a One Dance UK Dance Ambassador (2019-2021) and Dance Consortium Future Leader (2019-2020). During her time as an ambassador, Jodie was afforded multiple opportunities to represent One Dance UK as an advocate for dance in education and community settings at various local, regional, and national dance platforms including hosting several workshops and webinars for U.DANCE East Regional Festival (2021) and U.DANCE National Festival (2020, 2021, 2022), where she interviewed Sir Matthew Bourne OBE.

In March 2021, alongside peers from MA Dance programmes at Roehampton, Jodie co-founded and produced Dancing with Decolonisation (DwD), International online conference. The conference aimed to facilitate conversation between students, academics, performers, and choreographers, discussing how their work engages with colonial and/or decolonial narratives. Acting now as a producer, the DwD team has grown, covering several continents, aiming to provide a platform for conversation annually.

In her spare time, Jodie continues to explore her own professional practice as a dance artist, experimenting with fluidity and release across the boundaries of ballet and contemporary dance forms. Jodie is a dance artist with UK/Japan based company, Ranbu Collective.
